Websites from artwork
If you have existing artwork to be used on your website, looking for a web designer can be a little nerve-wracking. Your art is precious, and you need a designer who will treat it with respect. You don't want someone who will be determined to do their own thing, or who will want their design to get all the attention. You need to know that your website's design will blend harmoniously with your artwork; that your designer will allow the art to be the hero.
Designing sites based around other artists' or photographers' work is one of my very favourite things. I find it so inspiring to work with someone else's beautiful images, and I love creating a design which will blend with the feel of the art and allow it to shine.
You may in one of these situations:
- You are an artist, or a photographer, and you need a site to showcase your work.
- There is an artist whose work you adore, and you would love to have a website which features her work.
- You have existing visual identity materials – logo, brochures, graphic design – and need a site which continues the theme
- You have a very precise look in mind, and lots of references or examples of that look
If you already have artwork, I can work with what you have. If you don't yet have artwork but are planning to commission some, I can collaborate with your artist to make sure that I create a page layout for your site which is balanced and has the right kind of space for their work to shine.
Some examples
Here are some examples of sites I've created where the client had pre-existing artwork:
The Comfort Cafe
Jen Louden adored Claudine Hellmuth's art, and commissioned her to create some pieces for the Comfort Cafe. Claudine sent those pieces to me, and I created a design which continued the style and presented a harmonious backdrop for her work.

The Guild of Photographers
One of the great joys of working with photographers is that they always have such lovely photos to play with. We had a lot of fun selecting some images for the new site's homepage.

Damian Lobato
Being a tango teacher Damian had a range of gorgeous promotional studio shots. He also had a clear feel in mind for his site – he wanted something dark and gritty, visually rich, layered, and dark – something more like a painting than a conventional website.
So, I had a huge amount lot of fun layering his studio shots over stock photography of abandoned buildings, dirty alleys, dark rooms, and the like to create images which both had the feel he wanted and showed him in action.
